SLOW DEEP BREATH
Far x Wide is pleased to present SLOW DEEP BREATH, featuring works by Tess Bilhartz, Claudia Bitran, Hilary Doyle, and Kate Klingbeil. The artists in this selection share an interest in figures that draw strength from contemplation, and in some cases may be adjacent to some kind of conflict.

The women in Tess Bilhartz’s night landscapes are isolated and mysterious. Bathed in blue and violet light, it is as though they are practicing self-care at a noir retreat – self sufficient but with shadows nearby. While often working with and remaking source materials, Claudia Bitran uncovers layers of alienation in cinematic imagery – from figures estranged in their environment, to the wider disconnect experienced by viewers when consuming mass-produced images. Hilary Doyle’s monoprints depict the intimate routine of a figure getting out of bed. The soft bedroom light contrasts with a slightly weighed down posture, and the safety of this interior space is charged with a mild exhaustion that can’t be fully shaken off before facing the day. Kate Klingbeil’s paint people alternate between flexing, stretching, and self-protection. They act as two-way skins that embody the physicality of paint in human form, while also translating and eliciting bodily experiences through paint.

SLOW DEEP BREATH is organized by Jessica Cannon, and marks the eighth presentation from Far x Wide, an ongoing project featuring monthly selections of artworks to benefit social and environmental justice organizations. Works will be available on farbywide.com from 9/30/18 – 10/31/18 and any sales from this grouping will be split 50% to the artist and 50% to the Brownsville Community Culinary Center, an organization committed to the advancement of food justice through programs such as a culinary training program, café, and neighborhood gathering space. The café offers healthy, affordable food inspired by the history of the African diaspora, with ingredients often grown in Brownsville.
